Sherwood C. Casterline

Sherwood Casterline, 92 of Sand Lake passed away peacefully Sunday July 19, 2009 at his home. He was born October 4, 1916 in Holland, MI the son of Oscar and Ethel (Crandall) Casterline. The family moved to the Sand Lake area when he was a small boy, where he lived his remaining years. Sherwood proudly served his country in World War II in the European Theatre. He drove a 10 ton wrecker and received a bronze star for his service in the 4th Armored Division 37th Tank Battalion. He worked a variety of jobs as a young man but as his family grew he worked for many years as an independent logger. He later worked and retired from Oliver Machinery in Grand Rapids. He was best known for his love and collection of antique tractors. He was often referred to as the “Timeless Tinkerer”. Surviving are his loving wife of 60 years Muriel (Scott) Casterline; son, Allan Casterline of Pierson; daughter, Arlene (Tom) Culver of Howard City, grandson, Scott (Melissa) Culver; granddaughter, Stacey Culver; great grandsons, Ethan and Alex Culver all of Howard City. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Arden Bryan; daughter, Ardith Kelley; brother, Jack Casterline. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The funeral service will take place Thursday 1:00 pm at Ensley Baptist Church. Pastors Bert Boes and James Ankerberg officiating. Interment in Crandall Cemetery, Ensley Township with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to Walloon Lake Antique Tractor Show or Ensley Baptist Church.
