Richard J. Wagstaff

August 30, 1951 — October 13, 2021

Richard John Wagstaff age 70 of Cedar Springs passed peacefully, surrounded by his family Wednesday, October 13, 2021. He was preceded in death by his father, Heber Peter Wagstaff and his brothers-in-law, Brian Kinney and Denny Nickels. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Patricia; mother, Ruth Ann Wagstaff; siblings, Sheila (Bob) Klaasen, Sharon Kinney, Sandra (John) Walter, Janet (Ron) Zick, Bob (Norma) Wagstaff, David Wagstaff, Julie (John) Hegg; our Aunt Jo; dear friend, John Bryan; two beloved children; Steven (Emily) Wagstaff and Ann (Alejandro) Wagstaff along with 3 adored grandchildren; Gabriel, Adriana and Bailey. Richard was born on August 30, 1951 in Grand Rapids, MI. He lived his early years in and amongst his large family and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School. He continued his education at Ferris State University where he studied Automotive & Big Engine Repair, a passion he held throughout his life. Although they were both studying at Ferris at the same time, he didn’t meet Patricia until he began his career as a mechanic at Imperial Motors. She worked in the front office and he just couldn’t seem to keep away from her window. After working for 10 years as a mechanic, he continued on to the General Motors Fisher Body Plant, where he eventually retired after 31 years as a Skilled Tradesman in Welder Maintenance. He was a proud member of United Autoworkers Union Local 730. Richard loved camping “Up North” with his family and working on his many projects. He was never one to turn down a trip to the brewery for a hearty stout, Founder’s KBS was a favorite. He enjoyed sharing his passion for beer and loved to stock up on a special find for someone to experience with him. He and Patricia retired to a beautiful log home in Cedar Springs with plenty of pole barn storage to support some of his favorite hobbies; adding tools, vehicles and other gadgets to his Craigslist collection. Cars, motorcycles and any sort of motorized vehicle left a twinkle in his eye, but couldn’t hold a candle to the light in his eyes when he was with his grandchildren. They will remember him by his scratchy whiskers, bouncing knees and wide-eyed tickle monster attacks. When dealing with the stuff that life hands you, take a final piece of wisdom from Richard, “well… whatever.” Please join family and friends at Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs Friday, October 22 between 3-5pm to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the GRCC Foundation 143 Bostwick Ave. NE Grand Rapids, MI 49503.
