Richard “Dick” Brom age 87 of Coral, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, March 20, 2026, the first day of spring.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mary (Devine); brother-in-law, Dave McLeod; and sister-in-law, Mary Kampfschulte.
He will be greatly missed by his dear wife and best friend of 64 years, Sally Kay (Kampfschulte) and his children, Mike & Sherri Brom, John & Brenda Brom, Tim and Jennifer Brom; grandchildren, Rachel (Court) Borgman, Dana (Tyler) Dingman, Brandon and Colleen (Cater) Brom, Caroline, Erin, Tim Jr and Laura Brom, Lucas Costner; great grandchildren Colette, Dylan and Alice Kay Borgman.
His laughter and quick wit will also be missed at regular sibling get-togethers by his sister, Judith McLeod, Gerry and Judy Brom, Margaret and Pete Lomonoco, and his sister-in-law, Bonnie Howard; brother-in-law, Dave Kampfschulte and Dayle Maples, and many nieces and nephews.
The oldest of four, Dick graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central in 1956 (where he met the love of his life, Sally) and Aquinas College. He could have lived blissfully with Sally alone, but they proudly raised three sons, making many memories at St. Francis Xavier parish where their family thrived.
He retired from American Seating Co. after nearly 40 years and, on his last day of employment, removed the watch from his wrist and never put it back on.
He was unspeakably proud of his three sons, and marveled at their successes both professionally and as husbands and fathers. His special joy, however, was watching his grandchildren evolve from children to adults. The things he learned from them! And the engaging conversations and laughter! He observed them with wonder, and the feeling was mutual; there was never a dull moment if Grandpa was in the room.
In retirement, Dick and Sally enjoyed traveling, especially winters in Orange Beach, AL, trips to Europe, including Ireland, where he enjoyed researching his Irish heritage (in and out of the pubs). He was an Eagle Scout, enjoyed woodworking, could fix (or rig!) most anything, loved being in the kitchen, and especially enjoyed entertaining and everything Irish!!
In his later years, he enjoyed tinkering in his barn, bantering with his grandchildren, and sipping nightly Manhattans with Sally while watching the sunset over Cowden Lake.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Dick’s name to the Dominican Center, 1700 Fulton St. E., Grand Rapids, MI 49506 or Corewell Health Hospice, 1239 E. Beltline Ave NE., Grand Rapids, MI 49525 or a charity of your choice.
The family will greet friends Wednesday, March 25 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at K.E. Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, 4865 11 Mile Rd. NE, Rockford, MI 49341. Rev. Steve Cron, celebrant and Rev. Bill Zink, concelebrant.
