Patricia J. Starr

August 26, 1942 — November 25, 2023

Patricia Jeanne (Cavner) Starr was born August 26, 1942, in Nelson Township to Emmett and Nina Cavner. The youngest in the family, she joined her two older siblings Kathleen and Roger. Patricia's early education took place at East Nelson Country School, and she later graduated from Cedar Springs High School in 1960. After graduation, Patricia began dating Philip Starr leading to their engagement then marriage on October 27, 1962. Though Philip started as a barber, the couple's shared passion for farming prompted them to transition into full-time farming. In 1976, the Starr’s purchased the family farm on Cottonwood in Sand Lake. As they nurtured their farm, they also welcomed four children into their lives: Lisa, Scott, Lori, and Tammy. Being an exceptional cook and baker, Pat's love for her family shone through in her food creations. Everyone around her was blessed with the fruits of her labor. Neighbors, delivery people, milk haulers, and teachers alike were all blessed with her gift of candy making. Never one to settle for pre-made baked goods, Pat took pride in never purchasing a loaf of bread. Her pantry was a testament to her love for gardening and love for others. She raised a huge, beautiful garden and her shelves were always stocked with home-canned fruits, vegetables, preserves, pickles, and relishes. She instilled a love for gardening in her children, coupled with the understanding that mischief might lead to a garden weeding assignment. Beyond the kitchen, Pat maintained an organized home and managed the “books” for the farm proudly declaring Philip as in charge of “the barn and animals” while Pat oversaw the “house.” She displayed her talents as an accomplished seamstress, crafting clothes for her children as they grew up. She loved to craft, knit and crochet, creating cherished items for others. Patricia loved traditions of family dinners, gift-giving, and memory making. Her grandchildren could always count on her for baking their favorite dishes for birthdays, holidays, and other celebrations. As tradition goes, grandchildren knew they could count on grandma to give them baking dishes for bridal showers and a set of silverware on their wedding day. Pat made sure memories were being documented through countless photos - though rarely featuring herself as she was often the photographer. A woman of strength and determination, Pat supported her children fiercely, instilling in them the belief that they could achieve anything if they put their mind to it. Facing her final months with the same determination, Pat made tough decisions about her care, continuing to prioritize her family's well-being. She continued to take care of her husband and family until the end as that was what brought joy to her days. On November 25, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones, Patricia passed into the arms of Jesus. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Philip, and her children: Lisa Starr, Joel Scott (Christine) Starr, Lori (William) Heminger, and Tamara (Steven) Hall. Grandchildren: Carissa (Josh), Nicholas, Samantha, Erik, Clint (Shelby), Kyle, Benn (Brooke), Alyssa (Jacob), Ashley (Thomas), Gracie, Kaitlyn, Melanie, and Emily. Great-grandchildren: Kayla, Kevin, Liam, and Teagan. She is also survived by her best friend and sister, Kathleen Woodman. Sisters in law: Joyce Cavner, Ruth Starr, Linda Starr and Kathy (Brian) Percy.
