Morey L. Butler

December 19, 1928 — February 8, 2022

Morey Lloyd Butler, age 93, was called home by his Savior on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at StoryPoint Rockford. He was born the youngest of twelve on December 19, 1928 in Ensley Township, MI, to John William and Minnie Mae (Topping) Butler. Morey was raised in Ensley Center, and his grandfather Frank Topping donated the acre of land where the single room, Flowing Well School was built. Morey was paid 10 cents to light the morning fire to heat the school in the winter. A Butler family member attended the Flowing School for 46 straight years and is still in the family today. Morey met the love of his life, Joanne at a dance at the community building in Grant, and remembers driving a 36 Ford to take Joanne to the dances there. Morey and Joanne married May 1, 1949, cherishing 72 years of marriage. Together, they had three sons, Stephen, Kevin, and David. Morey believed in serving his community and “carrying our share” for the space we occupy on earth, which he proudly did. He served on the Newaygo City Council, was chairman of the Newaygo United Church of Christ building committee, and served as a Newaygo firefighter for more than 30 years. Morey was also a County Commissioner prior to being elected Newaygo County Clerk, serving for many years before retiring in 1995. Having no shortage of hobbies, Morey enjoyed hunting, reading the funnies (particularly Blondie & Dagwood), cars, traveling, and his license plate collection. He loved telling people about his favorite plate! After a long day, he looked forward to savoring a scoop of ice cream. Morey loved his family and loved Jesus, often spending time in prayer and the Word. Morey is survived by his loving wife Joanne; 3 children, Stephen (Bonnie), Kevin (Diane), David (Cathy); 8 grandchildren, Brianna Smith (Brandon), Brittney Houseman (Mike), Kevin (Dina), Ben (Heather), Justin (Kimberly), Jessica, Stephanie Monje (Tim), Joshua (Jessica); 15 great grandchildren. The family will greet friends Friday, Feb. 11, from 4:00-7:00 pm at Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Funeral Services will be held Saturday 11:00 am at Pine Grove Community Church, 8775 E. 88th St. Howard City with visitation at 10 am. Pastor Jeremy Scripps, officiating. Interment North Ensley Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Grove Community Church or to Emmanuel Hospice, 401 Hall St. SW Ste. 263 Grand Rapids MI 49503.
