Leon Arnold Fitzgerald, 93 of Grand Rapids, left us for his heavenly home on Monday, August 8, 2022. He was tender hearted, good natured, and a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. He made time for family and was a friend to everyone, as well as a world-class listener. If you were with him, your story mattered! He also enjoyed surprising those he loved with gifts, from slipping cash into your hand, filling up your car with gas, or his beloved pastime of washing cars. He found time to make you feel extra special because in his eyes, you were! His grandchildren will always remember sitting in his lap, the trips to the Dollar Store, and of course, the Tic-Tacs. Leon served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean War. He was a hardworking provider who was employed at Steelcase for 41 years. Leon is survived by Nancy, his wife of 71 years, son Thomas (Elleen) Fitzgerald, daughters Wendy (Arthur) Docter and Patricia (Dale) Zwyghuizen, grandchildren Lindsey (Mick) Force, Melissa (Brandon) Peters, Lisa Fitzgerald, Scott (Jennifer) Docter, Cara (Andrew) Galmish, Ashley (Stuart) Quackenbush, Mark (Shelby) Docter, Summer Docter, Olivia (Tristan) Chamberlain, Amy Docter, Melea Docter-Taylor, Ahni (Gabriel) McClellan, Christian Docter, Benjamin Docter, Jill Zwyghuizen, Joel (Megan LaZare) Zwyghuizen, Anne Zwyghuizen, 23 great-grandchildren, sister Suzanne Fleser, and sister-in-law Betty L. Fitzgerald. He is preceded in death by his sister Jean (Dirk) Hollebeck, brother Keith (Betty) Fitzgerald, sister Patricia (Floyd) Poll, brother William Fitzgerald, and brother-in-law Dale Fleser. The family would like to thank Faith Hospice for their wonderful care of Leon during his illness. A celebration of Leon’s life will be held at Magnify Church, Northview Campus, 4162 Hunsberger Ave NE in Grand Rapids on Monday, August 15 at 5:30 pm.
