Jerome Benham Phelps, age 96, began his eternal life with God on May 1, 2007. He was known as Jerome B., J.B., Dad, or simply Grandpa to those who loved him. Jerome was born on January 23, 1911, on his family’s farm on Ritchie Avenue, the same home he proudly lived in for the next 95 years. He was the youngest of five children, and an unexpected, but welcome surprise to his mother. His favorite stories to tell were those about his childhood on the farm and the important life lessons he learned from his Ma and Dad. In August of 1933, he married his beloved wife, Margaret Wall, and cherished her throughout their 71 years of marriage. Together, they were members of both the East Nelson United Methodist Church and Cedar Springs United Methodist Church. J.B. was a hard worker; and aside from his farming responsibilities, he held jobs at, among other places, Barnes Construction and Gibson’s. He and Margaret lovingly raised five children and cared for two foster children. Jerome liked to tell the story of having his daughter, Sally, riding a pony before she could even sit up while Margaret watched nervously from the window. He was well-known throughout Cedar Springs and beyond for his team of ponies, who always rode in the Red Flannel Parade and were invited to other parades as well. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he greatly enjoyed having them on the farm to learn from and play with him. J.B. had an uncanny sense of humor and would often surprise us with a smart one-liner when we least expected it. All who knew Grandpa would say he was an honest, faithful, and kind person who never had a bad thing to say about anyone. He always tried to do the right thing; and his example of quiet faith, humbleness, generosity, and forgiveness is an inspiration to his family and friends. Although Grandpa is now no longer with us, the legacy of love he has left will bless many generations to come. Jerome was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret. He is survived by his five children: Jerome Phelps, Jr., Earl (Joan) Phelps, Sally (Lester) Powell, Herbert (Dianne) Phelps, and Glenn (Denise) Phelps; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren. The family wishes to thank Metron of Cedar Springs for their care during Jerome’s final year. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. The funeral service will be held Friday 4:00 pm at the United Methodist Church. Pastor Brian Rafferty officiating. Interment East Nelson Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Springs Historical Society or Cedar Springs United Methodist Church.
