James H. Detmer age 88 of Pierson passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. Jim was born March 8, 1930 in Cannon Twp., MI the son of Leonard and Isabelle (Helsel) Detmer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War from 1947-1956. He enjoyed rock tumbling, making jewelry, gardening, collecting coins and loved fishing. He had a great sense of humor and was always there for his kids and family. He was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church and served on the trustee board and had volunteered at Helping Hands Food Pantry. He retired from Rapistan. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis; children, Kathleen White, James (Pamela) Detmer, Ernie (Sheryl) Smith, Frederick Smith, Debra (Morris) Veeneman, Rod (Shirley) Detmer, Cynthia Detmer; 25 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Smith; brother, Alvin Detmer. The family will greet friends Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. A celebration of life will be Monday 11:00 am at Heritage United Methodist Church, Pierson with Pastor Terri Cummins officiating. Interment Pierson Cemetery with military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to the church.
