Gary “Pete” John VanMeter, 56 of Trufant, died Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at Spectrum Health Blodgett Campus. He was born September 20, 1953 in Grand Rapids, MI the son of Wesley John and Delores Jean (Bawkey) VanMeter. He served in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and was a member of the Asbestos Workers Local 47. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved fishing and hunting. He enjoyed being a grandfather and loved his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Terri; 2 children, Jason VanMeter and his fiancée, Krysta; Sarah VanMeter and her fiancé, Jamie; 3 stepsons, David (Carrie) Leatherman, Jeff Leatherman, Kurt (Jill) Leatherman; 7 grandchildren, Kirstin, David, Nathan, Brooke, Colton, Madyson, Lillian; mother, Delores VanMeter; 3 sisters, Peggy (Jim) VanTassal, Sandra (Richard) Flowers, Deb VanMeter; special niece, Angela; uncles and aunt, Bob (Nancy) Coates, Dick Gage; mother and father-in-law, 7 brothers and sisters-n-law; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, John Wesley VanMeter. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs, where services will be held Monday 1:00 pm. Pastor Don VanSlyke officiating.
