Frances Cecilia Slavens 75, of Howard City passed away suddenly Monday, April 18, 2016. Frances was born July 4, 1940 and grew up in Grand Rapids, MI. On September 26, 1959 she wed Harvey Slavens Jr. the love of her life. Together they owned and operated H & H Auto Parts in Howard City for 35 years before retiring. After raising their 4 children, Frances took on her best role yet as “Grandma.” Frances helped babysit daily all 10 of her grandchildren and it was a job that came so naturally to her as her generosity and love could be felt by all that knew her. Frances loved spending time with her grandchildren and especially enjoyed supporting them in all of their sporting events. Very rarely did she miss a game as one of Tri-County’s biggest fans. Frances was a very loving individual whom always put everyone else first. She had a great sense of humor and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry & Lorraine Shepard; sisters, Pat DeZwaan, Mary Lou Shepard & brother, Robert Shepard. She is survived by her husband, Harvey; children, Tim (Kim) Slavens, David (Lynda) Slavens, Laura (Todd) Merlington, Shelly (Jamie) DeGeer; grandchildren, Trent & Tricia Slavens, Bo Slavens, Frazier & Alexis Firovich, Tyler & Alayna Merlington, Jade, Jimmy & Jenna DeGeer; brother, Harry & Laura Shepard. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs where the service will be held Friday 11:00 am. Pastor Chuck Kaliszewski officiating. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, Cedar Springs. Memorials may be made to Tri-County Athletics Frances Slavens Memorial.
