Deacon Edward C. Harwood, age 71 of Grand Rapids, joined his beloved wife, Joanne, in eternal life on Saturday, June 13, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 1, 1954 in Grand Rapids, the son of the late Clinton and Stella (Bezara) Harwood. Ed enjoyed many things in life including Frank’s kielbasa and the Detroit Lions, but most dear to him were the people. He treasured his children and loved being Grandpa. He was gifted at talking to strangers on street corners and making life-long friends. Ed was ordained a deacon by Bishop Walter Hurley on February 11, 2006. His ministry as deacon was a cornerstone of his life. His love for God’s people was expansive. He served at St Mary, Grand Rapids, St. Paul the Apostle, St. Catherine, St. Joseph and St. Francis. After his retirement from full-time ministry, he found joy in serving at several local nursing facilities and the clothing center at the Cathedral of St. Andrew. If you met him through his ministry, know that he loved sharing your lives and remembered you in his prayers.
He leaves behind his children, Mary, Michael (Amanda), David (Allison), Thomas, Andrew and Patrick; grandchildren, Serena, Elliott, Caia and Kaylee; sister, Carol (Steve) Malone; sister-in-law, Sue; extended family, and many friends, old and new. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Joanne and brother, Steve.
The family will greet friends 5:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday, June 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 18784 8th Ave. Conklin, MI with a Vigil service following at 7:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Thursday, June 18, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your favorite ministry or to the Clothing Center at Cathedral of St Andrew.
