Daniel Kevin McGovern was born on May 23, 1967, passed away at home in Grant, Michigan on Saturday, April 4, 2026 from a sudden illness. Daniel was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the first child of Kenneth and Mary Margaret. He spent his early childhood in Milwaukee, often found in the living room in front of the TV on Sunday afternoons, wearing green and gold, shouting out stats and standings, and cheering on the Packers with the unbridled enthusiasm only an 8-year-old fan can muster. In 1977 his family moved to Traverse City, Michigan; they were welcomed by over 4’ of snow, gale-force winds, and snowdrifts reaching the roof of their new home. Much to Dan’s relief the snow melted away and revealed beautiful beaches and sand dunes that fed his fun-loving, slightly mischievous soul. He recently shared stories of living in Traverse City, tubing down the Boardman River, water skiing, working on his friend’s cherry orchard (where he nearly lost an arm when it was caught in a shaker), and jumping off an old railroad trestle into the river below. When he was 20 years old, he joined the US Army, being promoted to an E-5 Sergeant during his 5 years of service. While he was in the Army, he met Ann and together they welcomed two sons and a daughter into the world. He was immensely proud of and deeply loved his kids, bragging about them to anyone who would listen, bringing them to jump off that trestle in Traverse City several summers, hitting the golf course with them, ardently cheering on the Packers, and channeling his inner chef while cooking them up some delicious food. His love of food, fun-loving spirit, and high IQ were a perfect combination for heading to the local Buffalo Wild Wings trivia night, where he devoured the wings, entertained and had the nearby customers laughing, and held the number one spot on the trivia board for years. Dan’s interest in and enthusiasm for the April 1 launch of the Artemis II mission led to many in-depth conversations and truly reflected his sense of intrigue, adventure, and opportunity to add a few more facts to his cache of knowledge.

With a painful ache in our hearts and forever an empty seat on the sofa cheering for our Packers, we say goodbye for now and release you into the loving arms of our Savior.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Margaret Lee (Smith) and father, Kenneth William McGovern. He is survived by his son, Daniel Kevin McGovern, son, Brandon Michael McGovern, daughter, Caitlin Elizabeth (Joe) Katt, beloved stepmother, Linda Lee (Pine) McGovern, brother, Gregory Steven (Julie) McGovern, sister, Trisha McGovern (Kirk) Freeney.
