Clyde J. Covell

Clyde James Covell, 85, of Ionia, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 10, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Clyde was born on September 24, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to George and Jeanice Covell. He grew up in Cedar Springs, where he developed a lifelong love of horses. As a young man, he raced horses and later built a successful career in masonry. He eventually became a business owner, operating mobile home businesses in both Cedar Springs and Ionia.

Clyde found great joy in horses, trail riding, horse shows, golfing, and, most importantly, spending time with his family. But most of all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of pride and happiness throughout his life.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Covell, of 20 years; his daughter, Pamela (Greg) Velting; grandchildren Emilee VerDuin (Kalin Georgiev), Erik VerDuin, Carson (Kelsey) Covell, Savannah Covell, and Lillian Covell; and great-grandsons Simon Georgiev and Arlo Covell. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Jason Thompson and Melissa (Plez) Oliver; step-grandchildren Kylee Thompson, Madilyn Oliver, and Lukas Oliver; and his siblings Leon Covell, Keith Covell, Mack Covell, and Judy Lang.

Clyde was preceded in death by his son, Chad Covell; his parents, George and Jeanice Covell; and his siblings, Roy Covell and Jeannie Cronk.

The family will greet friends Saturday, August 15 from 2 – 4 pm starting with a memorial service at 2:00 pm at the K.E. Pike Funeral Home, 13603 Northland Dr. Cedar Springs. Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating.

Clyde will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, love of horses, devotion to his family, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
