Clayton W. Sherman

Clayton William Sherman 92 of Sand Lake passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009 at Metron of Cedar Springs. Mr. Sherman was born February 24, 1917 the son of Alfred and Hazel Sherman. He served his country as a Marine in WWII spending most of his tour in the Pacific Theater. He worked 30 yrs at Doehler Jarvis in Grand Rapids before retiring to his home in Sand Lake where he has lived since 1960 . There he raised his 8 children sharing with them his love of hunting, fishing, and farming. He was a gardener at heart and loved to spend time working in his garden growing a wide variety of vegetables and flowers; He spent many hours just sitting and watching the garden grow. He was preceded in death by his wife Theresa (Thurner) Sherman in 1993, 4 brothers, Raymond, John, Alfred Jr. and Ken Sherman; 1 sister, June Woods. Surviving are 8 children, Theresa Phipps of Crystal, William Sherman of Sand Lake, John Sherman of Bridgeport, CT, Ruth Ann Lake of Cedar Springs, Dennis Sherman of Sand Lake, Patrick Sherman of Sand Lake, Sandra & Larry Wilson of Oak Ridge, TN, Debra & Bruce Hill of Sand Lake; grandchildren, Eric Phipps, Kevin Phipps, Corporal Mark & Silvia Sherman, Steven & Michelle Sherman, Matt & Nicki Lake, Jackie Demorest, Brian Sherman, Shirley Bratcher, Beverly Bratcher, Deborah & Roger Jones, Howard & Julie Bratcher, Andy Wilson, Molly Wilson, Adam & Giovanna Hill; great grandchildren, Sayge Lake and Chase Demorest; 2 sisters, Letha & L.C. Williams and Hazel & Don Huisman; 1 brother, Richard Sherman; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6-8 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday 2:00 pm at Mary Queen of Apostles Church, Sand Lake. Rev. Fr. Joseph W. Kenshol celebrant. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Sand Lake. Military honors under the direction of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard.
