Chad Covell, age 58, of Scottsdale, AZ, formerly of Cedar Springs, MI, passed away on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods, surrounded by his family. He was born on May 13, 1967, in Grand Rapids, the son of Clyde Covell and Susie (Covell) VandePanne. His passing followed a courageous eight-month battle with cancer after being diagnosed with gliosarcoma in November 2024.
Chad pursued a variety of career paths throughout his life. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from Central Michigan University and a Master of Business Administration from Michigan State University. Over the years, he owned and operated several small businesses, and most recently served as the Director of Finance for The Summit Foundation in Breckenridge, CO. While he appreciated the intellectual challenges of a career in business, Chad most cherished fun and adventure with the people he loved. Whether it was a cozy family movie night, a round of ping pong, card games (especially multiplayer solitaire and poker), karaoke in town, or a bigger outing to hike, ski, or mountain bike, Chad was always planning the next joyful experience with family and friends.
He spent many evenings and weekends playing or watching soccer with his children and made lasting memories on trips to U.S. National Parks, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and destinations abroad — most recently Peru, Mexico, and Malaysia. Chad will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his problem-solving mindset, and his witty sense of humor.
Chad is survived by his wife, Sarah Covell; children, Carson (Kelsey Griffin) Covell, Savannah Covell, Lillian Covell; step-sons, Joseph Boots Starr and Samuel Starr; mother, Susie (Dave) VandePanne; father, Clyde (Peggy) Covell; sister, Pamela VerDuin; niece and nephew, Emilee and Erik VerDuin; aunt, Barb Johnson. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Private family graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Cedar Springs, MI.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude for the love and support received from friends, family, and the staff at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Faith Hospice to support the continued delivery of quality and compassionate care.
