Betty Lorraine (Martin) Heiss age 100 passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2024 at Heritage Haus in Bellaire, Michigan. She was born October 16, 1923 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Orville and Erma (Applegate) Martin. As a child she loved working on the farm alongside her grandpa helping with many chores. As a teenager she could be found working at their families Whitefish Lake Resort in Pierson Township. She graduated from Howard City High School in 1942. Betty had two children, Nancy and Robert from her first marriage. On October 14, 1950 she married the love of her life, Melvin Jack Heiss. They settled down in Solon Township, building a house and farming their 20 acres. She had a passion for genealogy, history, writing and had published several books. She was proud to be involved with the Cedar Springs Historical Society. She spent countless hours at the Cedar Springs Museum, which now contains the Betty L Heiss Genealogical Library. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (Sophie de Marsac Campau Chapter).
She loved spending time with family, traveling, camping and most of all dancing with her loving husband, Jack. No matter what, family was the most important to her. Teaching the younger generation good values and making great memories. She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Melvin J Heiss and her beloved daughter, Nancy L (Heiss) Merritt. She is survived by her son Robert (Judy) Hey Sr., her grandchildren, Nancy’s sons Dan (David) Hilliker Tucker and Dennis (Michele) Hilliker. Her great grandchildren Andrew (Kayla), Aaron, Jackquelyn (Peter), Emily (Luke) and Stephen (Danielle) and 1 great-great grandson, Rory. Her grandchildren, Robert’s (Judy) children Theresa (Keith), Robert Jr., Christopher (Nancy), Joseph (Tammy), and Mary (Jason). 14 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.
The family will greet friends Saturday, Sept. 7 from 1:00 pm until time of service at 2:00 pm at the K.E. Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cedar Springs Historical Society.
