Alvin S. Veltkamp, 78 of Sparta, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. Mr. Veltkamp was born September 13, 1928 in Saugatuck Twp., MI the son of Henry and Reka (Schumaker) Veltkamp. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1948 – 1968 and retired from the Sparta Foundry as foreman after 20 years of service. He was very involved in the American Legion Post #287 where he had held many posts and was a past commander. Surviving are his wife Ivy; 3 daughters, Betty (Don) Kloostra, Linda (Buck) Fisk, Rita Bidstrup; 3 grandsons, Steve Fisk, Chad Fisk, and Rick Simmons; 2 great granddaughters, Melody and Emilie; 1 brother, Dick Veltkamp; 2 sisters, Hattie White and Altia Pap; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son Alvin “Butch” Veltkamp in 1997. The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 pm until time of funeral service at 3:00 pm at the Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home, Cedar Springs. Military honors will be conducted at the funeral home by the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. Interment Solon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans.
